Cours pour Mike

Today we looked at: I- Conjugaisons. There are 3 groups of verbs: First group finishes with "er" manger, chanter, aimer etc." note: there is only one verb finishing with er that doesn't belong to the first group but to the third one, it's "aller" (to go)- we'll have a look at it next week. Second group verbs finish with "ir" (and for the "nous" present form finish with "issons", we'l speak about it again) : finir, agir etc. Third group is for all the other verbs really.... finishing with dre, oir, etc. and even some verbs finishing with ir and aller. Prendre, croire, partir, etc.   Tenses... The are organised in 'mood' Indicatif is the mood that places verbs in time. There are simple tenses (présent, imparfait, passé simple and futur) and verbes composés, composed with être (to be) and avoir (to have) plus the verb itself (passé composé, plus que parfait, passé antérieur ans futur antérieur)                     _ imparfait je prenais mon bain_                           (Background past)                                  _________x____________________________________x___________________________            x_________________________x_________________________x__________________________________       plus-que-parfait                              passé-composé                                       présent                     Futur antérieur                        Futur (before another past action )  (&passé simple but less used nowdays     j'écris un roman.         before another futur action   j'avais éteint la radio,                    Precise moment in the past)                                                            J'aurai rangé la maison.......   quand il arrivera                                                     quand le téléphone a sonné.              the others moods are: Conditionnel : the equivalent of 'would' in english : J'aimerais une baguette / I would like a baguette Infinitif: the form found in dictionary : manger, prendre, finir etc... Participe: présent : indicate an action taking place same time as another one : Je travaille en chantant (I work and sing at the same time)....

Masculin-Féminin You know the gender of a noun by looking at the article that is in front of it le (the) un (a/an) for masculin name and la (the) une (a/an) for feminine word. Plural articles are the same for both masculin and feminin : les, des.   with 'à' (at/ to) there is a contraction in masculin and plural: Une glace à la vanille Un gateau au chocolat (à+ le=au) Une tarte aux myrtilles (à+les=aux) - Myrtilles = blueberries   Je vais au cinéma: I'm going to the cinema (à+le =au cinéma) Elle est à la plage (she is at the beach) Elle part aux Etats-Unis : she's going (leaving) to the United States (à+les=aux Etats-Unis)   Negation For a sentence to be negative, we sandwich the verbe between "ne" and "pas": Je ne fume pas: I don't smoke Note: pas can be replaced by other negative words : Plus (anymore) : je n'oublie plus mes clés : I don't forget my keys anymore. (ne becomes n' because the verb starts with a vowel) Jamais (never) : je ne prends jamais de café (I never have coffee) etc.   Être et avoir Être and avoir are two essential verbs. They are use as normal verbs but also are use as grammatical tool to create the composed tenses (temps composés) ÊTRE   (to be)                                                                  AVOIR (to have) Je suis contente                                                 J'ai un chien Tu es gentil                                                         Tu as une maison Elle est anglaise                                                Il a des cousins Nous sommes des amis de Marie                Nous avons des boucles d'oreilles Vous êtes grands!                                            Vous avez beaucoup de livres Ils sont en retard                                              Ils ont des chaussettes rouges.   Note:  Some expression use "avoir" in French instead of "être" in english and vice-versa : For exemple: I'm 12 years old : J'ai 12 ans (I "have " 12 years) I'm hungry: j'ai faim (I "have" hunger) I'm thirsty: J'ai soif (I "have" thirst) I'm right : j'ai raison I'm cold : j'ai froid I'm hot: J'ai chaud   When used with the "temps- composés", être and avoir are used with what we call the past participle of each verbs (but we'll have a closer look at that): j'ai mangé la tarte au citron (I have eaten the lemon tart). Je suis partie (I left).

Simple present, First group The first verb group are the verbs finishing with 'er' (infinitif, the form you'd find in the dictionary). To conjugate them, take the "er" out (off?) and replace it with the conjugated ending: Chanter 1- Je chante 2- Tu chantes 3- Il/elle/on chante 4- nous chantons 5- vous chantez 6- ils/elles chantent Note: 1,2,3 and 6 are pronounced the same way, or actually not pronounced as they are silent "e", "es" and "ent".  The only irregular verb finishing with 'er' and got sent to the 3rd verb group as a result, is the important verb 'aller' to go. Aller Je vais tu vas Elle, il, on va nous allons, vous allez, Ils vont   As in english we also use aller  for "close future" situation: -je vais acheter cette peinture ( I'm going to buy this painting ) -Je vais preparer le petit déjeuner (I'm going to organise breakfast). Note that the second verb is at the infinitive form ( 'er', first group verb) because in French when 2 verbs are following each others, the second is in (at?) the infinitive form.   Speaking of breakfast: Qu'est-ce que tu veux pour le petit-déjeuner? : what would you like for breakfast (textually: what do you want for breakfast). J'aimerais des croissants pour le petit-déjeuner, merci! I would like croissant for my breakfast, thank you   Meal of the day:   Petit-déjeuner : breakfast (not used as a verb, we use the verbe "prendre" take, je prends mon petit dejeuner à 8h, I have my breakfast at 8am. déjeuner : lunch (can be use d as a verb too : tu déjeunes oú ? where are you having lunch?) goûter : afternoon break (tea, brioche, toast and jams, only during the week-end when staying in your family, really...) Dîner : dinner (can be used as a verb too: On dine avec Karen et Seb ce soir: we're having dinner with Karen and Seb tonight) Aperitif (important!) drinks and nibbles before dinner Digestif: strong alcohol after dinner with the fallacious excuse that it will help digest...   In the sentence On dine avec Karen et Seb ce soir, 'on' means 'nous'. Below a video that explains the different uses of "on": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D4GHV8I04I   We've had a quick look at the question  Où :where? Quand? When? Comment? How?   We'll see how to use them on Saturday. We will also speak about the possessive pronoun : mon (my, masc), ma (my, fem.) mes (my, plural) etc.

Cours du 19 Juin: Jours de la semaine : Lundi Mardi Mercredi Jeudi Vendredi Samedi Dimanche   Mois de l'année (note: in French we don't write the months with a capital letter) Janvier Février Mars Avril Mai Juin Juillet Août Septembre Octobre Novembre Décembre   Je suis née le deux avril mille neuf cent soixante dix Marc est né le trente juin mille neuf cent quarante cinq   Les questions quand (when), où (where), pourquoi (why) et comment (how). Pourquoi est-ce que tu cuisines en pyjama? (why are you cooking in your pyjamas?) Pourquoi cuisines-tu en pyjama?   Quand est-ce que tu vas nettoyer la cuisine? (when are you going to clean the kitchen)? Quand vas-tu nettoyer la cuisine?   Où est-ce qu'elle cache ses bonbons? (where does she hide her lollies?) Note: qu' instead of que because there is a vowel afterwards Où cache-t-elle ses bonbons? Note the "t" between  'cache' en 'elle', to ease pronunciation because 2 vowels side by side.   Comment est-ce qu'il peut courir et manger en même temps? (how can he run and eat at the same time?)

Reflexive verbs For reflexive verbs, the reflexive pronoun indicates that the subject of the verb is performing the action on him/her/itself, rather than on someone or something else. The majority of reflexive verbs have to do with one’s body, clothing, relationships, or one’s state of mind. conjugaison is the same than other verbs, but the pronouns change depending on the person doing the action:   Se doucher: To take a shower   Je me douche tu te douches Elle/il/on se douche Nous nous douchons Vous vous douchez Elles/ils se douchent   At the negative forme, the "ne" is placed before the reflexive pronoun: Se lever :to get up Je ne me lève pas tu ne te lèves plus (not anymore) elle/il/on ne se lève jamais (never) Nous ne nous levons pas souvent (not often) Vous ne vous levez pas Elles/ils ne se lèvent plus   Question with inversion, the reflexive pronoun stays before the verbe: Se coucher (to got to bed) (no inversion for the first person (je and nous) impossible to prononce) Te couches-tu à 22h00? (do you go to bed at 10pm?) Se couche-t-elle en pyjama? (in pyjamas) Vous couchez vous sous la table? (under the table) Se couchent ils côte à côte? (side by side)
