Robert Battle
  1. Studied at The Julliard School and upon graduation, joined The Parsons Dance Company in 1994
    1. He began to choreograph for 'The Parsons Dance Company' in 1998
    2. In 2001 he founded his own company, 'Battleworks Dance Company'
      1. He choreographed for the AAADT in 2003, and subsequently choreographed with Judith Jamison
        1. He was the 'Artist in residence' at the company between 2006-2008
        2. He is the CURRENT artistic director for the AAADT and has been since July 2011
          1. 'Juba' - Modern day 'Rite of Spring' is a ritualistic and ethnic dance
            1. Aggressive, syncopated accents
              1. Black survival - similar to many of Ailey's concepts
              2. 'Love Stories' was a collaborate piece between Battle, Jamison and hip-hop pioneer Rennie Harris
                1. A combination of hip-hop and modern dance
                  1. Very random movement in second section... almost like a dance off & they seem to be doing normal everyday things, but in dance form. Represents the present - Harris
                    1. First section is very fluid and contemporary. Male dancer with very strong technique seems in despair at points. Represents the past - Jamison
                      1. The third section is far more ethnic, and the song choice emulates this. The hip-hop becomes more true to Ailey style. Represents the future - Battle
