- Early studies - Theology
- After reading Darwin's 'Origin of the species' devoted himself to Science
- He joined the Natural Sciences Uni of St Petersberg in 1870
- Primary Interests: Psychology & Natural Sciences
- Helped found Dept of Physiology in Inst of Experimental medicine.
- Oversaw for 45 years
- Originally his studies were nothing to do with Psychology
- He focussed on the ways in which eating excited salivary, gastric & Pancreatic secretions
- Fistula in dogs throat so food never got to the stomach
- Study won him Nobel Prize in 1904 in Physiology/Medicine
- Dogs became irreplaceable to Pavlov, but only in a selfish way
- Treatment was inhumane & would cause an outcry in modern society
- A bell or metronome was used(conditioned stimulus)
- Meat(unconditioned stimulus) in dogs mouth
- Dog starts to salivate at sound of bell/metronome ( Conditioned response)
- Classical conditioning has occurred.
