Discourse Markers

Anmerkungen:

• We use discourse markers of contrast to show differences between two points.

1. We use "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" together.

   Anmerkungen:

   • On the one hand, I'd like a job that pays more. On the other hand, I enjoy the work I'm doing at the moment.
2. "Although", "while" and "though" go before the two points being contrasted.

   Anmerkungen:

   • While my sister prefers key lime pie, I prefer chocolate cake.
   • Though it's raining outside, I'm still going to go hiking. 
   • Although Tom is sick, he's planning on going to school.
3. "However" and "whereas" go between the points being contrasted.

   Anmerkungen:

   • The movie got good reviews. However, it was very long.
   • The south has a hot, dry climate whereas the north has a milder, wetter climate.

Anmerkungen:

• We use discourse markers of comparison to show how things are similar.

1. "Equally" and "like" usually go between the points being compared.

   Anmerkungen:

   • Not all businesses are legitimate. Equally, not all customers are honest.
   • Brain food, like chocolate and fish, are supposed to help your brain stary healthy.
2. "Both" goes before the points being compared.

   Anmerkungen:

   • Both men and women have complained about the advertisement.
