7.2 Computer Architecture
- Internal Hardware and
external components of a
computer
- Three-Box model
- A computer system can be consisting of three boxes:
- The processor
- Known as the central
processing unit (CPU)
- Storage
- Known as the main memory of just memory
- Input and output
- Electronics for
communication with other
devices
- The architecture was first proposed
in 1945 by John von Neumann. And
is still used in the modern PC
- Processor
- The Brain of the system
- Responsible for
excecuting
programs and
supervising the
functioning of
the other parts
of the system
- Probably the most
complex element in the
system. But is simply just
a large finite state
machine
- A typical microprocessor contains
100,000,000 or more transistors
- Main memory
- RAM
- ROM
- EEPROM
- Bus
- I/O
- Peripherals
- I/O Controllers and devices
- I/O Port
- Secondary storage
