How Much is too Much?
- Pollution: a substance that is added to the environment
at such a fast rate that it cannot be broken down, stored
or recycled.
- substances that cause pollution are pollutants ex.DDT
- when measuring very dilte substances we will use parts per million (ppm) and parts per billion (ppb)
- 1 ppm = 1mg/kg OR 1mg/L (1 mg of solute
for every kg OR L of solvent)
- very toxic substances will be measure with ppb or ppt
- toxicity: the ability of a chemical to harm an organism
- Acute toxicity: when a chemical causes symptoms
after single exposure
- chronic toxicity: when after exposure for a long time to
the chemicals symptoms will finally show
- Lethal Dose(LD)50: The dose of a chemical that will kill 50% of
the group it is given to.
- a measure of concentration of the substance in
the body,
- Thalidomide: caused deformities in infants
- Penicilin: made by Alexander Fleming
and its ability to stop bacterial
infection
