Zusammenfassung der Ressource
B1 (YOU AND YOUR GENES)
- VARIATIONS
- Genetic factors e.g dimples,eye colour
- Environmental factors e.g scares,hair style
- GENETIC INFORMATION
- DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid
- Genes carry the information needed for you to develop
- Different geans controle diffrent charcteristics
- E.g hair and eye colour
- Chromosomes are made from DNA molecules
- made from
- to very long strands
- to form a double helix
- DNA molecules are instrctions for
- how the organism should be constructed
- how each cell should function
- Genes
- are sections of DNA
- Control the development of characteristics
- by using instruction that produce proteins
- protenins
- structural protenins
- E.G for cell growth or repair e.g collagen
- functional proteins
- E.G enzymes ( to speed up chemical reactions) such as amylase
- CHROMOSMES
- come in pairs
- different species have different numbers of pairs of chromsomes
- humans have 23 pairs with 46 in total
- 23 from the mother
- both x chromosomes
- 23 from the farther
- there is both x and y chromosomes
- y chromosmes is a lot small than x
- half and half
- the sex of an individual is determined by the
- sexdetermining region (sry)
- iif two x chromosmes are present it will be a girl
- if there is an x chromosome it will be a boy
- start producing androgen hormone
- some times the y chromosme is present but androgen isn detected.
- embro has female sex organs but not a uterus
- and is infertile
- ALLELES
- You can inherit two alleles that are the same this is called
- Homozygous
- you can inherit tow alleles that are different this is called
- Heterozygous
- brothers and sisters can ramdomly inherit different combinations of alleles
- The combination of alleles is called your genotype
- The actual characteristics you show is your phenotype
- Dominant allele
- controls development
- even if it is only one chromosome in a pair
- Recessive allele
- controls development
- if a dominant allele is not present
- Disease
- Huntingtons disease
- caused by one or more faulty allele
- faulty gene on the fourth pair of chromosomes
- affecting the central nervous system
- damages brain nerve cells
- symptoms involuntary movement, clumsiness, memory loss, mood changes and inabiliry to concentrate
- seen in adulthood
- leading to premature death
- only one parent needs to pass on the gene to inherit it
- it is a dominant
- cystic fibrosis
- affects the cell membranes causing a thick mucus
- problem in the lungs,gut,pancreas
- symptoms including weight loss, difficulty in breathing, chest infections and difficulty in digesting food
- no cure
- allele is recessive
- need to of them to get it
- one will be a carrier and will pass it on
- GENETIC TESTING
- testing for one faulty allele
- risks and benefits
- TESTING ON ADULTS OR CHILDREN
- if it is found the adult may not have children
- or odopt in sted
- children can be tested to help with treatment
- or tested be for prescribing certain drugs
- TESTING ON FETUSES
- Fluid surrounding the fetus or the placenta can be tested for an faulty alleles
- a small risk inculiding a miscarriage and outher implications
- if a faulty alllele is found the parents have to consider if the pregnancy should be have terminated
- other family members might have to be told
- they too could pass on the faulty allele
- RELIABILITY
- no test is 100% reliable
- may terminate the pregnancy even if there is no problem
- see book for table
- THE IMPLICATIONS ON GENETIC TESTING
- some people think that what we can do and what we should do is an important
- used to screen for
- susceptibility to certain diseases or conditions
- possible problems with prescribed drugs or treatment
- people think it should be used on babies at birth for
- to tailor healthcare and prevent problems
- to stop genetic disorders from being passed on and eliminating over time
- one view is that this will mean that there is less suffering and a lower cost spent on treatment
- but some people think that it is natural and it will be wrong to eliminate them
- raises questions about confidentiality should people like employers or insurance people have this information
- if they have a higher risk of illness
- EMBRYO SELECTION
- able to pervent babies from haveing genetic disorders
- this can be produced in (in vitro fertillsation) or (ivf)
- harvested ,tested, implanted then the pregnancy proceeds an normal
- pre-implatation genetic diagnosis (pgd)
- the embryos are allowed to divide into the eight cell stage before a single cell is tested
- tested to see if they have the allels for the genetic disorder
- some people do not llike embryo selection
- think it is unnatural
- concerns that people could chose certain characteristis
- so some could die out like brown eyes
- Asexual reproduction
- it is division of single cell organisms and bacteria
- this forms 2 new cells from 1
- clone
- most plants and some animals do this
- variations normally only caused by environmental factors
- animal clones can occur naturally
- an embryo may separate and the 2 embryo's are identical twins
- animal clones artificially produced by nucleus from one transferred into cell with no nucleus
- unethical
- see book for diagram
- plants make clones out of bulbs and runners - daffodils
- allow plant survival without male female together. ( sex cells called gametes)
- Stem cells, 2 types adult and embryonic
- yound cells that are not specialised that can quickly develop into different ones.
- can be used to replaced tissues - Parkinson,s disease
- adult stem cells
- only found in bone marrow or umbilical cord blood
- cannot develop into all types of cell
- Embryonic Stem cells
- from embryo
- need to clone embryos to get
- can develop into any kind of specialised cell
- controversial but regulated by gov as can help many people
