2015 Paris Agreement
- What is it?
- A 32 Page Document
- Issued on 12 December 2015
- Commits 195 countries
- To reduce their emissions of greenhouse gasses.
- So future average atmospheric temperature won't exceed...
- 2C over pre-industrial levels
- World leaders officially signed up in April 2016
- What have countries agreed to?
- A temperature increase of 2C is to be avoided
- Limit the increase at 1.5C
- Sequestation later this century will be needed
- Emission targets will be set by countries seperatley
- However these will be reviewed every 5 years
- And emmission levels will be decreased meaningfully
- Wealthy countries will share their science and technology to help reduce emissions
- Countries that have historically emitted a lot of GHG's recognise the loss and damage inflicted on poor countries
- UK
- Poorer countries are given time to de-carbonise their economies
- Without sacrificing economic prosperity
- Will it work?
- Relies on two factors
- If countrie(s) are unable to meet their target for 5 year review
- Other countries will remain positive and invested in the agreement
- Countries sticking to their agreements
- What might go wrong?
- Countries may find it too expensive to phase out old practices
- For example coal powerstations
- China are only increasing their use of coal
- And will continue to do so over a long period of time
- Countries priorities may change
- If hit by an economic recession for example
- Replacing fossil fuels with 'green' energy is so far out of our reach
