Closing time by Semisonic
- Mise-en-scene
- In both the settings there is a lot of green, like the
wallpaper and the paint.
- this links the two settings together and suggests
that there is a relationship between the characters.
- Lighting
- It is mostly artificial lighting as it is set at night, because it is
closing time.
- However it is still quite light as they use lamps to light the
settings.
- settings
- Throughout the video there is always two settings on the screen.
- One side of the screen is for the woman and the other for the man
- The man is in a room which looks to be a recording studio,
this shows him with the rest of the band.
- The woman is closing up a cafe which fits in well with the
song,
- Costumes
- They are wearing every day clothing that they would
wear in the 90's.
- The woman is wearing a white coat, which idealizes her.
- It also makes her stand out as the other costumes are dark
- The man then puts on a beige coat which again makes him stand out.
- Props
- The payphone and the other phone
- This at the beginning of the video links the two character together.
- It also establishes that they are looking for each other but
even then miss each other.
- Instruments
- This shows that they are pop artist rather than stars
as they want to be seen as being more serious than
just as stars.
- the bike
- To transition between scene they use a bike
as a way to show that they are travelling
- about the song
- It was released on the
10th March 1998.
- It is a mixter of alternative
rock,post-grunge, pop rock, and
power pop.
- It is a narrative and performance video as it is about the
lead band member and his girlfriend trying to meet, but
at the start he band is performing to the song.
- Camera work
- The shots are very long and they track the characters around
the different settings.
- This means that there is a lot of pans and tilts to frame the charaters
- this is really effective as the audience feels like they are following
the characters them self.
- There is establishing shots of both of the two settings at
the same time to introduce them both.
- There is a veriaty of shots in this video as the video has very few cuts in it.
- They use close-up shots of both the characters to show how
the woman is feeling and doing and to show the man lip syncing
to the song.
- there is also a mid shot of the woman turning the open sign
to a closed sign which is significant to the song.
- It also shows the woman closing up the shop using a mid shot to
emphasis the signifcance of the "closing time".
- At the same time as this is happening there is a mid shot of one of
the band members which means the audience will pay more
attention to the woman.
- There is also mid shots of the band to show them as performers.
- Editing
- The shots are very long and do not have a lot of cuts as they are
continous and only cut when the setting changes.
- This is very difficult as the they have to time both scenes
so they fit in together at the right pionts.
- Especially for the phone part.
- The vidoeohas a split screen that tell the
story of two people at the same time.
- It is about a couple who are boyfriend and
girlfriend who are trying to find each other but
never do.
- They also move between the two split
screens when they go to the others location.
- To cut between scenes they pan to something and focus
on that they then track it or pan around and then the
audience then see the characters again
- Paralle editing
- Throughout the video they are doing different things at
the same time, and they just keep missing each other.
- they use a bike to tranistion between some
scenes, this makes it more fluent and create a
soft transition.
- what was good about it
- I like the split screen as it shows the two stories at the
same time.
- I also like the way that they transition between the
scenes as it is a soft transition and barely noticable
