Safety of children on the Internet

Internet is an excellent medium that serves not only to inform but to communicate and interact with others. The possibilities offered by the Internet are endless but, as with other media, access to the Internet by minors also has its less friendly face: the little ones can access content that we do not always like them to see.

Surfing the Internet with children is an important and entertaining experience. Before you begin you must keep in mind that, like all media, the web should be used judiciously.

But in an environment where the child is old enough to enter words on the keyboard and enter the world of the Internet, parents should monitor and supervise what their children see and hear, they know and what personal information we share with other users. This free and uncensored connection to the world can be really dangerous.

Safe Browsing Children Online

The Web is a marvel of technology for children, full of exciting and interesting forms of communication and learning, do not hesitate to take full advantage. Equipped with sleek computer skills and very curious, children go online with increasing frequency. Go online to interact with friends, work on school projects and play. Although the Internet has advantages, it also has its dark side: a world full of images and inappropriate language, not to mention criminal elements who hide behind false identities.

Child Abuse

We must reject bluntly child pornography and display any illegal content. The story is just beginning to be written, that define children as subjects of law and create the social conditions for compliance is not easy. It forces us all to re-signify the value of life, from the simplest issues to the dramatic reality of knowing that there are hundreds of guys who are still held by appropriators.

Risk figures

The International Association of Criminology (ICAA), in conjunction with Symantec recently conducted a survey of 5,000 children in Italian schools from eight to thirteen. The researchers examined the online behavior of children and their perception of Internet. The ICAA also surveyed parents and teachers to better understand children online risks. The study, entitled Survey of perceived risk in Internet that children have produced the following results:

· Most children regularly use chat rooms, newsgroups and other interactive services to communicate online with strangers

· Forty-seven percent of adults occasionally supervise minors in Internet

· Twenty-seven percent of children are unsupervised

· Thirty-four percent of children never receive advice from parents about what should and should not do when browsing the Internet

· Most teachers are unsure about how to address the issue of Internet and think they should improve the method of teaching IT skills

Security tools and parental controls

Although education and communication can contribute a lot to protect their children, not enough. You need a solid set of security tools and parental controls to facilitate and strengthen their efforts to protect their children. Finally, we must limit the scope of our children. We do not want to expose them to risks. For this reason, the Internet presents a particular challenge: allow our children to explore while ensuring their safety. Fortunately, with greater involvement of adults, a little trust and the right tools, protection on the Internet is a challenge we must afrontar.-

Children and the Internet: do not let them talk to strangers

The popularization of the Internet has made the majority of households have computers connected to the network. At first, surfing the Internet was too expensive to do it for mere amusement, but the wide range of broadband and flat rates has achieved that in households where a computer, almost all members of the family have their own email or seeking information on the Web in a systematic way. Of course, this includes children and adolescents who have found online entertainment of a similar magnitude to that television can have. It is not surprising, therefore, that studies like the one conducted by BBC Online Network ("Little supervision for online kids in UK"), reveal that only in the UK, 70% of children have Internet access from home, and these, over 52% invest a minimum of five hours a week of sailing. And this is not far from what happens in Argentina, with similar values, which are simply deduced happen at certain times by various cyber or cyber cafés.-

The Web, a part of the Internet is a vast network of virtual libraries. However, not all the contents of these libraries is something you would like to see or would like to see their children. For example, your 8 year old can write a word into a search engine. But if by mistake the child writes one word for another, can have access to thousands of unsuitable pages for children, some with pornographic material.

The law conventions for communications 1996 (Communications Decency Act) created largely for this purpose, was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States a year later. Law to protect children online (Child Online Protection Act - COPA), adopted in October 1998, decreed that the use of the Internet to communicate material deemed harmful to minors is a federal crime, and made to suppliers Commercial sexually explicit adult materials (such as pornographic websites) by restricting access to minors. But this also has been challenged because it limits freedom of expression and prevention measures (court order prohibiting enforcement) were ordered. And although they have adopted privacy laws that treat the online collection and distribution of personal information of children and the need for parental consent, the Internet is largely unregulated. For example, right now, in most states, it is illegal for pornographic Web sites Explicit Ads send email (although it may be illegal in some states if the person knows that sends email address belongs to a minor).

This means that the best protection for your child online is you. By talking to your child about potential online dangers and monitors the use of the computer, give you the tools to learn to surf the Internet safely.

Watch Forums

Forums are virtual rooms where conversations are kept. Participants of a forum can be grouped by interest or topic, such as football or a favorite TV show. They are a great place to meet people from all over the world and to learn about any topic instead. Being able to communicate with a person or groups of people makes the forums are one of the most popular sites on the web, especially among children and adolescents.

Many children feel that your computer is a device that can be used for interactive games or chat with friends. But once you start using the Internet as a source of documentation for their work, find it much more than a place for games. Any child or adult who show interest in cyberspace offers can type a word into a search engine to scan thousands of Web pages. In some cases, the pages that appear as a search result contain information about pornography, drugs, alcohol, snuff, gambling, groups that promote hate and intolerance or overt violence.

According SurfControl, a provider of software that removes inappropriate materials of computers in schools and homes, the most dangerous place for a child on the Web are the forums. Pedophiles (adults sexually interested in children) are common in the forums. These adults may try to convince children to give them personal information such as addresses or phone numbers and thus make the children and families at risk of becoming victims.

The FBI estimates that children left home alone after school or whose activity on the Internet by parents is not controlled at greater risk of being sexually exploited on the Internet. When connected to the internet to "chat" with friends or hang out, many children spend hours on forums being targeted sex offenders. These predators often seek children lonely, troubled, that connect to the Internet in search of a friend.

Warning signs that your child may be a victim

There are warning signs that may make you think that your child is being targeted by a criminal on the Internet. Your child may be a victim if you spend many hours online, especially at night. If calls from unknown or unexpected gifts arrive by mail, suspect and ask about your contacts on the Internet. If your child off the computer when you enter your room, ask why and check the hours that connects more carefully. The isolation of family life and reluctance to discuss their activities on the Internet are other signs that your child may be the victim of a sex offender.

How to minimize the risk of your child

There are ways to censor or monitor your child's access to adult material and minimize the risk of attracting criminals when browsing the Internet. Experts agree that the most important for parents and people caring for children can do to protect them from the dangers of the Internet is to control their activities and educate them about the risks of cyberspace.

Options restriction service provider Almost all online service providers (OSP by the acronym) and Internet service providers (ISP by the acronym) offer parents control options or blockage. The Member Services section of your ISP or OSP can help you customize the controls and filters for each of their children. Even if you choose not to impose control over the Internet activities of your child, the FBI and the NCMEC advise that at least create a fancy name for your child and protect his true identity.

Blocker Software

The blocker software prohibits or blocks access to sites deemed "inappropriate" that appear on a list established by the owner of the computer and the ISP or OSP list. The list updates vary by manufacturer. Remember that the number of new Web pages are published each day exceeds the capacity of any software company to update a list of "improper sites" and some adult sites outside the block.

Filtering Software: Software programs used keyword filtering to block pages containing these words alone or in different contexts. One criticism is receiving filters that block sites that are not necessarily offensive. For example, a filter that blocks pages with keyword "sex" also blocks the pages on "sexology". Some filters allow parents to choose their own categories and keywords related.
