The growth and location of tertiary and quaternary activities Tertiary sector grows in importance as a country becomes more economically developed

Generates more employment and wealth
A strong tertiary sector is a sign that a country's population is wealthy enough for disposable income to spend on services

Quaternary sector is only found in the most economically developed countries (information, communication, latest technology)

FACTORS CAUSING THE GROWTH OF TERTIARY AND QUATERNARY ACTIVITES
1. Rise in prosperity and personal wealth

With a job in the tertiary sector, people earn more money and have money to spend on basic necessities
They then have disposable income left to spend on luxuries: entertainment, holidays, recreation
This increases the demand for services, providing more jobs

2. New technology

Technology has provided new jobs and employment for people (website designers, software programming, etc.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE LOCATION OF TERTIARY AND QUATERNARY ACTIVITIES

Location factors: the needs of an activity

Primary and secondary sectors have strong location needs
Both rely on raw materials and cannot be located too far away (save on transport costs)

Tertiary sectors have more important accessibility needs
Has to be located where customers can access the services they provide
