AHL Sub-topic 9.5: Doppler Effect
Textbook References: Tsokos (6th Edition): pp 381-388 Understandings:

The Doppler effect for sound waves and light waves

Applications and skills:

Sketching and interpreting the Doppler effect when there is relative motion between source and observer

Describing situations where the Doppler effect can be utilised

Solving problems involving the change in frequency or wavelength observed due to the Doppler effect to determine the velocity of the source/observer.

STARTER: Open this Simulation on the Doppler Effect. Click on the image to start the simulation & explore the Doppler Effect by changing the Speed of the train (>,>>,>>>) of the note being played. Record some initial observations in your notebook. (5 mins) Main Activities:
Task #1: Systematically explore the nature of the waves detected by the observer in this Doppler Effect Online Interactive by changing the directions of motion of the observer or the source of waves. (7 mins) Task #2: Watch this Youtube Video on the Doppler Effect. (8 mins) Task #3: Download and look carefully at the example problems in this PowerPoint on the Doppler Effect. (10 mins) Task #4: Attempt these Problems on the Doppler Effect (Show ALL working.) (20 mins) Task #5: Check you answers against this ANSWER KEY. (5 mins)
