Don’t always go by the name: Always remember that genealogy is not always about the name. Many times we do this mistake of giving a lot of importance to surnames while searching for our distant relatives. Rather than this, try to focus more on the events that shaped your family history and the places that they are associated with. There are several instances where people change their names for one or the other reasons.
Beware the Celebs: It is a common human tendency to claim descent to a historical figure of a popular celebrity. It is always important to go by the fact and real documents rather than trying not to wrongly associate oneself to a famous personality.
Seeing isn’t believing: It is always advisable to not to simply go by the pictures and try not to make much of the submitted documents. Always verify the documents and IDs and try to match them in before coming to a specific conclusion. It is often the case that we tend to jump the gun before waiting for the substantial proof of the documents and verifying them with other sources. So, always crosscheck the facts.
Never mind the spellings: Do not always strictly follow the spelling rule. Some of the family names might have different spellings but may have the same lineage. It is often the case with longer names.
Simple to Manage and Operate: Always try to keep your family tree simple, both in terms of looks and managing them. Legend has it...: Most of us would have spent our childhood listening to family legends and some of us would have taken them quite serious. Though some of these stories might be true, but it is also a human nature to create some false stories merely based on imagination. So always verify them based on some substantial proof.
