Frage Antworten
During what period was asbestos used in construction? Asbestos can be found in any building built before 2000, with it being regularly used in construction from the 1950s until late 1990s.
What are the different types of asbestos? There are 3 different types of asbestos : (i) crocidolite (blue) (ii) amosite (brown) (iii) chrysolite (white) Blue asbestos is generally considered to pose a greater risk due to it being more durable and having finer fibres. White asbestos is generally accepted as being lower risk, but there is no recognised safe limit for exposure to any form of asbestos.
What are the health risks associated with asbestos? When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed / damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. Asbestos can cause the following fatal / serious diseases : - mesothelioma - asbestos related lung cancer - asbestosis - pleural thickening
What legislation is there regarding asbestos? In 1999, the government decided, with no exceptions, to ban the use / import of asbestos completely. Principal regulations that apply to works that could expose persons to respirable asbestos fibres are the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. In addition, HSE has produced : - L127 The management of asbestos in non domestic properties - L143 Work with materials containing asbestos More general H&S legislation that needs considered : - Management of H&S at Work - CDM Regulations 2007
What key changes have arisen from the 2012 regulations? There has been an addition of a third category of work, notifiable non-licensed work, to go with licensed work and non-licensed work categories. The main consequence of changes is that some types of non-licensed work now requires employers to : - notify the work - ensure workers have medical examination every 3 years - keep record of type and duration of work done with asbestos
Explain what an asbestos management survey is. The purpose of a management survey is to manage ACMs during the normal occupation and use of the premises. This type of survey aims to ensure that : - nobody is harmed by continued presence of ACMs in the premises - that ACMs remain in good condition - that nobody disturbs ACMs accidentally The survey involves minor intrusion and minor asbestos disturbance to make a materials assessment. This shows the ability of the ACM, if disturbed, to release fibres into the air. The area should be vacated during the survey.
Explain what an asbestos pre-refurbishment / demolition survey is. This type of survey is required where the premises, or part of it, need upgrading, refurbishment or demolition. This type of survey aims to ensure that : - nobody will be harmed by work on ACM in the premises - such work will be done by the right contractor in the right way The survey must identify all ACMs before any structural work begins at a stated location in the premises. It involves destructive inspection and asbestos disturbance. The area surveyed must be vacated and certified "fit for reoccupation" after the survey.
