Year 11 - Topic 1: Classification and Biodiversity

Mrs Z Rourke Biology GCSE English 3.0Average rating 3.0 out of 5 (1 rating) 13 cards

Cards in this deck (13)

  1. 1What 2 groups can plants be classified into?Flowering plants and non-flowering plants
  2. 2What 2 groups can animals be classified into?Vertebrates and invertebrates
  3. 3What is meant by the term morphological adaptations? The features that an organism has to enable them to survive in their environment e.g. fur, large ears etc
  4. 4What is meant by the term behavioural adaptations? What an organism does to enable it survive in their environment e.g. hibernation
  5. 5What 4 things do organisms compete for in their environment?Food
    Water
    Light
    Minerals
  6. 6What factors may affect population numbers?Predators
    Competition for resources
    Disease
    Pollution
  7. 7What is the difference between interspecific and intraspecific competition?Interspecific - competition between different species
Intraspecific - competition between members of the same species
  8. 8What equipment do you need to sample a field of daisies?Quadrat
  9. 9Why do you need a large sample size? There will be a greater chance that you will have the true value that needs to be estimated
  10. 10When using capture-recapture technique to estimate a sample size, what assumptions are made?No death
    No immigration
    No emigration
The marking technique does not affect chances of survival
  11. 11Why are biological control agents used? This is a non-chemical way to control the numbers of unwanted organisms
  12. 12Advantages of biological control agents.1. No chemicals are used so there's less pollution, disruption of the food chain and risk to people eating the food that has been sprayed
    2. There's no need to keep repeating the treatment like you would with chemical pesticides
  13. 13Disadvantages of biological control agents.1. The predator you introduce may not eat the pest
    2. The predator could eat a useful species
    3. The predators population may increase and get out of control
    4. The predator may not stay in the area where it is needed
