The reason for reversing about five car lengths or more into the side road is:
To practise straight reversing
So that you don't upset local residents
So you can move back to the left safely
In case there is traffic on the left
The signal to move to the right is delayed so that other road users don't think that you intend to turn right.
Learning to reverse to the right can be helpful because:
