SUPINE GERUND GERUNDIVE MAIN USES

Supine.

1. Acc. After vbs of motion to express purpose. eg, lusum it Julius

2. Abl. After certain adjs incl fas, nefas, facilis, dulcis etc,   eg, mirabile visu

Gerund.

1. Acc. Following ad, ob, inter etc to express purpose. eg, ad bene vivendum

2. Gen. After some abstract nouns. eg, ars scribendi

3. Abl. With or without preps to express cause or instrument. eg, fugiendo vincimus

Gerundive.

1. Attributive Adj. What could/should happen translated by "capable of", "worthy of". eg, vir laudandus, res metuandae

2. Predicative Adj. As above but conveys sense of necessity and incl use of sum:

     a. mulier audienda est (the woman must be heard)

     b. Impers construction with intrans verbs: Romam tibi veniendum est, laborandum est nobis (we must work)

3. Constructions not conveying obligation or necessity:

      a. Acc. Conveys purpose. ad + acc. eg, ad foedus renovandum convenerunt

      b. Gen. eg, cupiditas belli gerendi.   Also used with causa and gratia (for the sake of/ by reason of):
         eg, Cicero revenit urbis servandae causa (Cicero returned for the sake of saving the city.), pacis petendae causa

      c. Dat. As required by accompanying vb or adj.

      d. Abl. With and without preps.

Note: Purpose in Latin. Expressed by:

1. Supine in acc fol vb of motion.
2. Gerund fol a prep such as ob, ad, etc.
3. Gerundive in acc after ad.
4. Ut/ne + subj.
