Question | Answer |
Japan's invasion of Manchuria (Summary) | Sep 1931 - Mukden Incident / Japan invades. / League report orders Japan to withdraw / Japan refuses / occupies rest of Manchuria established Manchukuo / Full scale war with China by 1937. |
Japan's 'excuse'. | In 1931, the Japanese army invaded Manchuria with the excuse that the Chinese had sabotaged their railway at MuKDEN (Mukden Incident) Japanese troops were 'needed' to guard against further attack. |
Other 'motives' for the occupation of Manchuria. | Japan was suffering from economic depression. (China & US had placed tariffs on Japanese goods) Manchuria could provide raw materials. Japan's population was increasing rapidly - Rice from Manchuria would feed them. The Government had been taken over by the Military who wanted to extend Japanese influence in the Far East (Esp. against USA) |
What was the league's response? | The League sent the Lytton Commission. Lord Lytton's report declared Japan the aggressor & ordered Japan to leave Manchuria. (Japan refused). Instead Japan left the League. |
Significance of the Manchurian crisis? | League was proved weak in it's first major challenge. Revealed significance of not having the US. Not a real 'global force'. Italy and Germany realised the league was a "toothless dog". |
Criticisms of the League's Response | The report took a year to compile. No sanctions were applied. Britain & France not interested - too far away. 40 nations had condemmned Japan - yet nothing was done. Didn't even stop sale of arms. |
