AlloysAn alloy is a Mixture of a Metaland Other ElementsAlloys can be a mixture of two ormore different metals (like brass orbronze)They can also be a mixtureof a metal and a non-metal(like steel)Alloys often haveproperties that aredifferent from the metalsthey are made from- andthese new properties oftenmake the alloy moreuseful than the pure metalSteel is an Alloy of Iron andCarbonSteel is harder thanIronSteel is also strongerthan iron, as long asthe amount of carbondoes not get largerthan about 1%.Iron on its own will rustfairly quickly, but steelis much less likely torust.A lot of things are made from steel- girders, bridges, engine parts, cutlery, washingmachines, saucepans, ships, drill bits, carsetc.Brass, Bronze, Solder and Amalgam are alsoAlloysBrass is an alloy of copper and zinc. most of the properties of brass are just a mixture of those of the copper and zinc, although brass is harder than either of them. Brass is used for making brass musical instruments (trumpets, trombones,French horns etc.). it is also used for fixtures and fittings such as screws, springs, doorknobs etc.Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. It's much harder andstronger than tin, and it's more resistant to corrossion thaneither copper or tin. Broze is used to make springs and motorbearings. It's also used to make bells, and it's used insculpture.Solder is usually an alloy of lead and tin. Unlike purematerials it doesn;t have a definite melting point, butgradually solidifies as it cools down. This is prettyuseful if you want to solder things together. An amalgam is an alloy containingmercury. A large-scale use of one kindof amalgam is in dentistry, for fillingteeth.Modern fillings tend to be made from tooth-colouredresin instead. This is partly because amalgam fillingsare dark silvery in colour, and thereforemratherobvious in your mouth, and partly becasue peopleworry that the mercury in the amlgam could causehealth problems (although there is not much evidencefor this). Some Alloys are SmartNitinol is the name given to a family ofalloys of nickel and titanium that haveshape memory. This means they "remember" their original shape, and goback to it even after being bent and twisted. This has increased the number of uses for alloys. You can get specs withNitinol frames- these can be bent and even sat on and they still go back intotheir original shape.Double click this nodeto edit the textClick and drag this buttonto create a new node
