Open Arms is a non-governmental, non-profit organization whose main mission is to protect, by having a presence at sea, those people who try to reach Europe fleeing from war, 1) (PERSECUTE) or poverty. Born from a rescue and first aid at sea company with extensive experience in the Spanish coasts.
We specialize in surveillance and rescue missions of boats carrying people who need help in the Aegean and Central Mediterranean sea, as well as raising 2) (AWARE) of all the injustices that are happening which have been untold.
Our mission started with the image of a drowned child on a shore. Covers of newspapers, social media, televisions... and no Government did anything. We want our children, future adults, to grow up in a society where it is 3) (CONCEIVE) to see such an image and let such a thing happen. We want them to know our story, so that fighting for a cause like ours would cease to be necessary.
The stories of torture, abuse and violations of the rights from along the way of those we rescue in the Mediterranean make us realise that once at sea, there is no solution. For this reason, we work in West Africa through training and 4) (SENSE) to empower these communities of origin. (In)formation saves lives.
The deaths and 5) (DISAPPEAR) of migrants in the Central Mediterranean have multiplied. Our goal is to be where they need us, that is why we are there with a rescue and surveillance boat, to help avoid more deaths.
The Migratory Routes
The 6) (CLOSE) of the European borders, and the vanishing of almost every regular option to migrate to Europe, has led to the consolidation of mafias along migration routes to Europe. People who migrate in an irregular way fall into the hands of these smugglers and they become vulnerable to all kinds of abuse and they completely lack protection.
The Dangers of Migration
At least one in every 18 people drowns and dies.
More than 90% of the people have suffered sexual, physical and/or psychological 7) (VIOLATE).
At least 33,293 people have drowned in the Mediterranean since 1993.
Less than 25% of asylum applications in Spain are accepted.
Thousands of migrants who arrive in Europe Spain live in an 8) (REGULATE) situation with serious physical and psychological consequences.
Mafias monopolize the journey while ruining entire families.
Together with local organizations that want to be part of this positive and constructive change, we work to...
o Deconstruct the imaginary about migration to Europe, through information campaigns and community 9) (REFLECT) about the alternatives.
o Create networks of collaboration and work along with the private sector to promote local 10) (EMPLOY).
o Empower the community and its young people by facilitating access to digital pedagogical tools and professional training.
Ever since Open Arms began working in the Mediterranean, we have shared a lot of time on board with the people we rescue. Everybody has told us about their journeys, which often have lasted for years. All of them explain how their rights have been 11) (SYSTEM) violated.
That's why we realize that once in the sea, there is no solution. The best way to save lives is to go to the origin.
59.706 LIVES SAVED
Since September 2015 until July 2019, we have managed to save each and every one of these people, giving them a chance to reach dry land after embarking on one of the most 12) (DANGER) voyages of their lives at sea.
