Biopsychology - hemispheric lateralisation & localisation of function

Question 1 of 21

1

Explain what is meant by hemispheric lateralisation

Select one of the following:

The two halves of the human brain each have functional specialisations
All of the brain is involved in processing
Certain functions of the brain have certain locations in specific brain regions

Explanation

Question 2 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

To investigate the of each hemisphere, Sperry used 11 patients who had their severed to reduce severe symptoms. So the two hemispheres could not information.

Question 5 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

Sperry's split brain research: he used a screen to present an image or word to the left or right . A range of tasks was used, involving patients responding with their left hand ( hemisphere) or right hand or ( hemisphere).

Explanation

Question 6 of 21

In Sperry's 'Describe what you see' task, patients...

Select one or more of the following:

...named an image presented in their RVF but not their LVF
... couldn't name image presented in RVF but could draw it using their right hand
...couldn't name image presented in LVF but could draw it using their left hand
...named an image presented in their LVF but not their RVF

Explanation

Question 7 of 21

In Sperry's 'Recogniton by touch' task, patients...

Select one or more of the following:

...couldn't name an image presented in LVF but could select it from bag of objects using left hand
...couldn't name an image presented in RVF but could select it from bag of objects using right hand
...could name an image presented in RVF and could select an object
...could name an image presented in RVF and but could not select an object
...couldn't name an image presented in RVF and couldn't select an object

Explanation

Question 8 of 21

1

In Sperry's 'Composite words' task, 2 words were presented simultaneously one on each visual field. e.g. key on the LVF and ring on the RVF. Patients...

Select one or more of the following:

... could say LVF word - Key...
... could write LVF word - Key...
...and could say the RVF word - ring
...and could write the RVF word - ring

auditory area

Wernicke's area

Broca's area

Explanation

Question 11 of 21

1

Label the main functions of each area

Select correct option below corresponding to the highlighted orange point

controls voluntary movements

processes sensory info from skin

receives and processes visual info

processes sound and speech based info

Explanation

Question 12 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

The function of the motor cortex is to movements. It sends to on the opposite side of the body. The left controls on the side vice versa.

Explanation

Question 13 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

The function of the auditory area is to process and based information. Info received by the left ear is processed by the vice versa.

Explanation

Question 14 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

The function of the somatosensory area is to process information from the - including heat, touch and . The more the area of the body, the part of the somatosensory area is to it. E.g. Over half of this are is for and face.

Explanation

Question 15 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

The function of the visual is to receive and process visual information. Each eye sends information from right visual to , vice versa.

Explanation

localised in left temporal lobe

localised in left frontal lobe

Explanation

Question 20 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

found using scans that London taxi drivers have a large of matter in the than in non taxi drivers. This is an area associated with spatial and . This shows that certain are localised in areas of the brain, as theory

Explanation

Question 21 of 21

1

Fill the blank spaces to complete the text.

A limitation of localisation theory comes from ... criticised the claim that functions are localised, by proposing the theory- that and sensory functions are localised, but functions (e.g. ) are not. So not all functions may be localised
