In 2012 18% of Londoners were identified as cyclists Source B. With the increasing numbers of cyclists you would expect that the injury rates in the cycling community to be higher. Actually there were fewer accidents recorded in 2012 than there were in 2000 Source A. In 2000 there were 35.6 casualties per million cycling trips while in 2012 there were 25.3 casualties Source A. Despite this, one of the main factors people state as a reason for not cycling is ‘the perception that cyclists are vulnerable to other road users’ Source B. Londoners are being encouraged to cycle; there is a strong perception that the health benefits outweigh risks. This has led to a number of bicycle hire schemes across the capital. It is however debatable whether this has increased the safety of cyclists in London. The numbers of people who hire bicycles are less likely to wear safety equipment such as helmets or hi-visibility clothing; 16% of people who hire a bicycle wear helmets as opposed to 64% of people who own ride their own bicycle Source C.
