-Description of the Unit: This unit is mainly based on communicative and writing practise, leading to the meaningful practise of Past Tenses, enhancing and developing their knowledge of the English vocabulary -Level: A.2.2 DIDACTIC AIMS To learn and to use new vocabulary through the word formation, calques and loans. To be able to describe life in the past by using suitable structures in the past. To became aware of the richness and cultural diversity of the English language by studying its development from its very beginning. Te get to know the importance of French in England in the Middle Ages. CONTENTS The contents tend to integrate the 4 skills a) CONCEPTS    Communication Talking, writing and reading using the expressions of Past  Describing life in the Past Language Reflections . Language and Grammar Functions: Past tenses: Simple Past and Past Perfect . Vocabulary: word-formation loans and calques from French . Pronunciation The sounds /t/ /d/ /id/; /i/ /ii:/; /ae / / a / / a:/ Social and Cultural Aspects Showing interest in knowing the French influence in English language. ones. b) PROCEDURES To take specific information from a text To carry out and complete activities with English Past tenses To relate events, dates, anecdotes etc... To complete sentences and tables   c) ATTITUDES To get self confidence in both comprehension and production. To show interest in knowing English language origins EVALUATION CRITERIA Communicative skills and Language Reflections . Written Competence: . Read and answer a text about Norman culture in Middle ages . Write a short summary of lifestyles in Middle Ages. . Complete an exercise trying to find out the suitable past tense, and Norman loans and calques Oral Competence . Speak about Norman culture in Middle Ages . Read aloud brief summaries of lifestyles in Middle Ages . Oral games to develop Past tenses acquisition Social and Cultural Aspects . Read a text about life in Middle Ages during the Norman settlement. .  Summarize some curiosities from Norman Conquest

PROCESS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING FIRST SESSION Warm up: I will try to motivate the students writing on board some English words that are Norman French loans and Calques (very similar to French actual language) -Teacher asks them to discover from where this word come.                 Ex::  . Assassin, assault. . Beef, mutton, veal, venison, pork, bacon, sausage, . Captain, lieutenant, sergeant . Dress, habit, gown, robe, garment, cloak, petticoat, lace . blue, brown, vermilion, scarlet, russet, , tawny. . brooch, turquoise, amethyst, garnet, ruby, emerald. . biscuit, cream, sugar, olives, lettuce, almonds. . spice, clave, thyme, mustard, vinegar, roast, boil, stew. . cathedral, mansion, chamber, ceiling, cellar, chimney.                 -Once known that these words are Norman French loans, students must divide them into fields. The words that they don’t know must be looked out into dictionary. SECOND SESSION -Teacher gives to Students a brief text about historical development on the English language after the Romanization till 1500. Students must pick out the main sociolinguistical events from the text. Exercises with regular and irregular past:  Irregular Verbs - Fill in the correct form - . Students, from a set of English past verbs, must classify them into regular and irregular ones.    

. Teacher gives them some filling gaps exercises. Students transform these sentences into negative and interrogative form. If students don’t remember it, teacher explains it and make some translation exercises.
