organised sport* rugby/cricket - public schools such as christ college brecon and monmouth promoted rugby and cricket - rugby union popular in south wales - sucessful modern rugby sides such as cardiff, swansea, newport and llanelli well established - 1905 wales beat the all blacks - 1908 broken time issue-led to professional rugby leauge being set up so players could be paid.* football - widley played and well supported throughout wales - best know side at the time was merthyr town- founded 1907 - cardiff city founded 1910 - fans travelled to the games by trains- cheap for spectators and support homes town
