| Referral | Available for young people between the years of ten and seventeen, who are appearing for the first time in court. They take part in a programme which aims to stop any further offending. If they break this contract they are referred back to court. If they carry it out successfully, they do not have a criminal record. |

| Detention at her majesty's pleasure | Offenders aged 10-17 years old who are convicted of murder must be given a custodial sentence. The judge will set a tarrif and the offender will be released after this. |
| Detention and Training order | This can last between 4 and 24 months. Half of the time would be spent in custody, and the other half spent in rehabilitation as a part of the community. The orders can be passed on to offenders aged 12-21. Those under 15 can only be eligible if they are persistent offenders. |
| Detention for Serious crimes | Maximum sentence of fourteen years or more for adults. Offenders can be detained for up to the same time as adults. |
| Young offenders institute | Offenders aged 18-20, minimum sentence is 21 days. Maximum is that for the offence commited. Should only ever be used as a last resort. If offender becomes 21 years of age whilst in the institution, they will be transferred to an adult prison. |
| Under 18's | Those who are under the age of 18 years old will be held in some other form of secure accommodation. |
