Referral Available for young people between the years of ten and seventeen, who are appearing for the first time in court. They take part in a programme which aims to stop any further offending. If they break this contract they are referred back to court. If they carry it out successfully, they do not have a criminal record.
Discharges Commonly used for first time offenders who have committed minor offences.
Fines The maximum amount of fine varies with the age of offender. £250.00 for those aged 10-13 years old. £1000.00 for those aged 14-17.
An attendance centre requirement Involoves the attendance of the offender at a special centre for two to three hours a week.. Maximum of 36 hours for those aged 16-24. A maximum of 24 hours for those aged 10-15.
A reparation Order Imposed on those under eighteen, the maximum is 25 hours of work. Should the victim agree to it, the reparation can be direct to the victim.
A supervision Requirement Places those under eighteen under the supervision of either local social services, a probation officer, or a member o the youth offending team. Can be for a maximum of up to three years,
Youth rehabilitation order (YRO) Young offenders aged 16 and over can be given the same community based orders as adults, however curfew orders can be used for offenders from the age of ten and upwards,
Detention at her majesty's pleasure Offenders aged 10-17 years old who are convicted of murder must be given a custodial sentence. The judge will set a tarrif and the offender will be released after this.
Detention and Training order This can last between 4 and 24 months. Half of the time would be spent in custody, and the other half spent in rehabilitation as a part of the community. The orders can be passed on to offenders aged 12-21. Those under 15 can only be eligible if they are persistent offenders.
Detention for Serious crimes Maximum sentence of fourteen years or more for adults. Offenders can be detained for up to the same time as adults.
Young offenders institute Offenders aged 18-20, minimum sentence is 21 days. Maximum is that for the offence commited. Should only ever be used as a last resort. If offender becomes 21 years of age whilst in the institution, they will be transferred to an adult prison.
Under 18's Those who are under the age of 18 years old will be held in some other form of secure accommodation.
