Feliks Skrzynecki - How the concept of belonging is conveyed through the representation of people. Feliks > Feliks has strong emotional ties to his Polish heritage and belongs to his past. "about farms where paddocks flowered." Feliks and his Polish friends reminisce about Poland, keeping the past alive. However Peter is excluded from the conversation, signifying his belonging to a different context of time and place. Peter > Peter experiences confusion about hwere he belongs. "A language; I inherited unknowingly." This reinforces his sense of powerlessness.
St Patrick's College - How the concept of belonging is conveyed through the representation of people. Peter> An overriding sense that Peter never belonged to St Patrick's permeates the poem. "Unchanged by eight years' weather." Just like the statue of 'Our Lady', Peter has been minimally altered by his educational experiences. "Before I let my light shine." There is a sense of hope and potential. However, it will be achieved away from the school. Peter's Mother > Peter's mother works hard to create a place to belong " Wanting only; 'What was best' ". Her efforts are based on the perceived values and attitudes of her new environment. She wants to keep up with other Australian families by sending her son to a 'good' school.
Ancestors - How the concept of belonging is conveyed through the representation of people. Skrzynecki explores issues surrounding his heritage and identity in his search for a sense of belonging. "Who..Why." He questions situations and events that he has no control over. Skrzynecki feels cut off ftom the past and this creates a barrier to belonging. " Mountains...river/...moonlit plain/...grasses." Behind the ancestors of Skrzynecki's fancy are epic natural features. These figuratively represent legacies passed down through generations. Peter is uncertain and uneasy about his future and there is no sense that he will achieve a sense of belonging. "Where.../Do their footprints lead?" The poet is unable to understand any communications from his ancestors.
10 Mary Street - How the concept of belonging is conveyed through the representation of people. Peter > Peter experiences confusion about where he belongs. "Kept pre-war Europe alive" There is a sense of duality, of two lives lived, with the poet accessing both and yet neither are meaningful to him. The poet takes his sense of belonging in the home for granted. "I'd ravage the backyard garden" The house has less significance to Peter than his parents and he is self-critical and remorseful in his reminiscences. His Family > Peter belongs to a different context from that of his parents. Peter feels social pressure to change, while his parents hold onto the old ways.
Migrant Hostel - How the concept of belonging is conveyed through the representation of people. His Family> The family questions whether that will achieve belonging in their lives. "Birds of passage." In the midst of change it is difficult for the Skrzynecki family to ascertain where they are heading and if they will again achieve a sense of belonging. Other Immigrants > The other immigrants experience similar barriers to belonging. "Who would be coming next?" this is an enxious time filled with disappointment and frustration at the uncertainty and sense of powerlessness.
