historical fiction A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in history. Real historical figures and settings may be included in a fiction story.
biography the true story of a real person's life from the past or present. Someone else writes it.
mystery fictional stories that have a real setting and a puzzling situation or crime that needs to be figured out. It usually includes suspects and clues.
historical nonfiction A nonfiction story that takes place in a particular time in history. The characters and events are true.
science fiction stories that blend fact and fiction with futuristic technology. There can be time travel, travel to other galaxies, new inventions, robots, aliens, time machines, etc.
mystery fictional stories that have a real setting and a puzzling situation or crime that needs to be figured out. It usually includes suspects and clues.
adventure stories with a lot of action. They involve danger, risk, and excitement.
informational nonfiction books that give true facts on a variety of subjects. They may also include graphs, maps, diagrams, photographs, etc.
traditional literature stories that people told/passed down to one another over the years. Later the stories were written down. A lesson can be learned from it. This includes folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths from different cultures.
autobiography the true story of a real person's life from the past or present. It is written by that person in the first-person point of view. (I, me, my)
poetry Verse written to inspire thoughts and feelings in the reader. It often uses rhyme and rhythm, or it can be written in free verse.
realistic fiction Made up stories that could really happen. The characters have real-life problems.
fantasy fiction that has elements that are not real. Sometimes this includes talking animals or characters with magical powers. There's usually a conflict between good and evil.
fairy tale have special beginning and/or ending words - Once upon a time...and they lived happily ever after. There are good characters and bad characters. There is usually royalty and/or a castle in the story. Magic is involved.
