What two trends did the research reveal? 1. Secularisation- theorists argue there is a decline in traditional Christianity, with a god who tells people how to live their lives. 2. Sacralisation- theorists argue that there is a growth in new age practises such as yoga and tai-chi
Why did they choose Kendal? Kendal is a regional centre of approximately 28,000 people in south east of the Lake District. It is small enough to be able to investigate thoroughly but large enough to have a range of traditional religions and new age spiritualities.
What is the congregational domain? Where people come together in designated places of worship to engage religious traditions.
What is the holistic milieu? Where people come together in groups or one to one encounters to explore interconnected body-mind-spirituality.
How did they compare the congregational domain and the holistic milieu? The number of people in congregations of Kendal on a particular Sunday was compared with the number of those participating in the holistic milieu during the average week.
How did they count the congregational domain? The study took a headcount of those who attended the 25 Christian churches and chapels in Kendal on Sunday 26th November
How did they count the holistic milieu? The study used a questionnaire to count those involved with new age spiritualities.
How many people attended Church? 7.9% of the Kendal population, the same as Britain. Attendance for Kendal has declined since 1950s
How many people attend the holistic milieu? The holistic milieu shows strong growth. In the 1970s there were 3 providers of holistic spiritual services in the YellowPages. In 2000, there were 95 In 2000, 1.6% of Kendal used these services but only 55% considered the activities to be spiritual
What was the main conclusion of the Kendal Project? That 'spiritual revolution' clearly had not taken place in Kendal but if present tend continues the revolution will take place in 20-30 years, when holistic milieu will overtake those in the congregational domain.
