Which piece of equipment is used to generate electricity? Generator
What happens in a boiler? Water or a liquid is heated to produce steam which will spin a turbine.
Which fossil fuels can be burnt to heat the boiler? Coal, oil, gas
What is the purpose of the turbine? To power the generator to generate electricity.
Define "renewable energy resource" A resource that will not run out i.e wind
Biofuel is carbon neutral, what does this mean? It took C02 out of the air using photosynthesis, so burning it has no overall effect on C02 emissions.
Which elements are used to fuel nuclear power stations? Uranium and Plutonium
Which type of renewable powerstation uses falling water? Hydroelecric
Which renewables do not use the sun as the original source of their energy? Wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, biomass, wave.
Which type of renewable does not need a generator? Wave
What is the difference between a solar cell and a solar panel? Solar cells generate electricity whilst solar panels heat water.
Which gas, released from burning coal, produces acid rain? Sulphur dioxide
Which fuels are non-renewable? Coal, oil, gas, nuclear
State one advantage and disadvantage of nuclear power? It is expensive to build but cheap to run once going. (Any plausible answer)
Which type of transformer raises the voltage of electricity? Step-up transformer
What is the voltage of the mains in the UK? 230v
Why do we use high voltage and not high current in our power cables? To make it more efficient so not as much heat is not lost.
State two disadvantages of using underground cables than overground cables? Hard to get to if something goes wrong and more time consuming and therefore expensive to build.
What do we call the collection of wires and pylons that carry electricity around the country? The National Grid.
