  1. helps child sort out varied impressions by using isolated activities
    1. Materials
      1. proportionate for children
        1. made of natural materials: wood, stone, cotton etc
          1. Clear and simple; escape from overstimulation
            1. feedback is inherent to avoid need for adult oversight
              1. is this possible with all materials?
                1. mistakes will become apparent to child leaving them to self-correct
                2. making each item in a set identical isolating one quality
                  1. isolation of a single quality
                    1. shows child to use senses other than sight- if musical rods are diff sizes and colours, he can rely on that rather than sound
                      1. have child close eyes when learning tactile activities
                  2. 3 Stage Lesson
                    1. 1: present 'things' (extremes) and have child experience and name them
                      1. 2: group related sensations, have child hand you items you name
                        1. begin to exist as unified idea
                          1. 3: Give context to each sensation, have child ID 'things' by name
                            1. "associated as a quality (1), related to other instances of that quality(2) and sometimes quantified as a degree of that quality(3)"
                          2. to introduce to absorbent mind
                            1. child will learn what is appropriate for development and will find enjoyment in that
                            2. Vocab given is important for classification
                            3. Perfect ex. of gettman's earlier section on "Learning by Connecting"
                            4. fundamental environmental qualities
                              1. control of error intrinsic in environment and materials
                                1. aesthetics- encourage child to care for enviro
                                  1. activity- not an idle observation
                                    1. limits- form of order, too much is chaos
                                      1. reminds me of lillard- no materials on shelves at start of year
                                    2. necessary qualities of a lesson
                                      1. few words used- when too many are used it distracts from main purpose
                                        1. simplicity (truth)
                                          1. "this is a square"- dont describe and talk of corners, sides etc allow child to discover
                                          2. objectivity
                                          3. first duty of an educator: "to stir up life but leave it free to develop" :)

                                              1. Tactile and muscular (stereognostic) and visual provides triple image--> greater understanding

                                                            2. the period between 3-6 is when sense training should be most intense as kids are more receptive to stimuli than reasoning

                                                              1. mneme- historical memory where individual stores info on life experiences
                                                                1. = memory in the conscious mind
                                                                2. engram- trace of those experiences
                                                                  1. integration of engrams = problem solving in the conscious mind
                                                                  2. Horme- drive to experience life, to interact, take action
                                                                    1. = will in the conscious mind
                                                                    2. "experience life, record the experience, and integrate the experiences in unique ways to understand current situations"
                                                                      1. Hand in Education
                                                                        1. importance of manual work in the classroom through the use of hands and upper limbs
                                                                          1. Using hands as subordinate tools to carry out activities prompted by intelligence and social needs
                                                                            1. Use of hands as a sensory organ which then improve ability to complete more difficult tasks
                                                                        2. Treat others how you would like to be treated- APPLIES TO KIDS TOO!!
                                                                          1. Didactic material provides order for the mind so they are prepared for writing and math later
                                                                            1. Sandpaper letters & movable alphabet
                                                                              1. prepares for reading and writing
                                                                                1. teaches sounds not name of letters
                                                                                2. Rods for addition (adding 8 and 2 rather than 1+1+1+1 etc)
                                                                                  1. the 8 is a united whole rather than 8 single parts
                                                                                3. Good and evil- evil in children is merely something we adults find annoying because we don’t understand it
                                                                                  1. Bread example: if a child needs something to live (bread) and we tell them they cant have it, they will naturally attempt to attain it by other means but if we give them what they need and crave for their developmental and physical well being then problem is eliminated
