                    2. A gerund is a form of the nonfinite verb (not conjugated) used to make a verbal phrase that can replace a nominal phrase. The present participle form is used, since it ends in 'ing', for example 'hearing'.

In addition to the simple infinitive, like 'to speak', there are also infinitive progressive ('to be speaking'), perfect ('to have spoken') and passive ('to be spoken')
