they can sometimes be the reason you survive
1. especially for groups like the greasers who had to defend against the socs

how it affected his friends
1. kept Dally out of jail most of the time
  1. until his death
2. caused Johny to believe he had a reason to live
3. was really what kept Darry from being a Soc
most of the greasers didn't have family or at least a good one
1. Johny had a abusive parent
2. Dally's dad didn't care about him and couldn't care less about what happened to him
3. Darry Soda and pony were the onely ones who did have a caring family who were brothers
  1. but they still lacked their parents
