Streptococcal Pharyngitis
  1. Clinical Presentation
    1. fever >101.5, dysphagia/odynophagia, tonsilar exudate anterior cervical adenopathy erythema and swelling of throat,
      1. secondary s/s
        1. ear pain, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
    2. Management
      1. Treatment
        1. Medications
          1. Penicillin V (10 days), Penicillin G (IM Injection), Amoxicillion (10 days), Cephalasporins
        2. Investigations
          1. Rapid Strep Screen
            1. if negative, Throat Culture
              1. 24-48hr wait for results
            2. CBC r/o Mono KOH Slide
          2. Pathophysiology
            1. causes
              1. streptococcus pyogenes
                1. responsible for 15-30% disease
              2. Contagious period over after 24h of starting abx
              3. Epidemiology
                1. non-invasive group A steptococal infection
                  1. colonoziation of upper respiratory tract
                2. Risk Factors
                  1. young age, time of year (late fall early spring), close contact (schools, families) bacteria flourish in close contact
