Communicative Approach
  1. Goals
    1. Acquire knowledge of the lingusitic forms, meanings and functions.
      1. Learn how and when to use the language according to the social context and the roles of the interlocutors.
      2. Characteristics
        1. Everything that is done has a communicative intent.
          1. Conversation has to be free so students can choose the form and content of their conversation. (No chain drills)
            1. Work in small groups of students.
              1. The use of authentic materials, have students develop their own strategies for understanding the language.
              2. Interaction
                1. Student-Teacher
                  1. The teacher acts as a facilitator and establishes situations that engage students in conversation.
                  2. Student-Student
                    1. Students mostly interact with each other.
                  3. How is it viewed?
                    1. Language
                      1. Language is used for communication
                      2. Culture
                        1. Everyday lifestyle of the people who use the language.
                          1. Non-verbal communication
                        2. Native Language
                          1. The use of the native language is permitted but conversations, explanations and instructions are always produced in the target language.
                          2. Evaluation
                            1. It may be done in a formal or informal way
                              1. Student's accuracy and fluency is evaluated.
                              2. Emphasis
                                1. The four skills are equally used since the beginning.
                                  1. Language functions over forms.
                                    1. Students work with language at a discourse level.
                                    2. Feelings
                                      1. Students are motivated in learning the language and they are given the freedom to express their individuality.
                                      2. Roles
                                        1. Teacher
                                          1. Facilitates communication, monitors conversations and advises students.
                                          2. Students
                                            1. Students are communicators, engaged in negotiating meaning and also seen as responsible of their learning.
