Earthquake Planning and Management

Predicting future earthquakes
1. Hazard mapping
2. Frequency of previous earthquakes
3. Animals moving
4. Rises in the water table
5. Radon gas can be emitted
6. Minor earth tremors (fore shocks)
Reducing the impacts
1. Planning restrictions
2. Building regulations
3. Encourage pet ownership to help find survivors
4. Build schools away from the path of lahars
It is very hard to predict earthquakes as they happen suddenly without warning
North Anatolian Fault
1. 1000km fault line in Turkey
2. Earthquakes frequently occur in this area
  1. Collision between Arabian and Eurasian plate
3. Previous earthquakes have been very well documented
4. As an earthquake occurs on the eastern side of the fault line the stress moves further west along the fault line
  1. This is called 'stress triggering'
5. Scientists managed to predict the location of an earthquake in 1999
  1. Scientists now believe that Istanbul is the most likely place for the next earthquake
Reducing Vulnerability
1. Education
  1. Earthquake drills in schools
  2. Earthquake practice in offices
2. Timber Condominium
  1. Scientists are working hard to construct earthquake proof buildings
  2. Wood can handle the force of an earthquake as it has a high tensile strength
3. Building Design
  1. Cross bracing
  2. Shear walls
  3. Shear core
  4. Counter balancing water tanks
  5. A 'moat' around the foundations
