Most MP's are known as 'backbenchers'
Responsibilities include:
Weekly 'surgeries'
Writing to ministers to resolve grievencies with constituents
Asking written or oral q's at PMQ's
Canvassing support for Early Day Motions
Requesting leave from Speaker for debates
Introducing Private Member Bills
Coordinating e-petitions on behalf of public/constits
MP's also have a responsibility to Parliament + party
One is through the Committee System
Most backbenchers and peers are members of at least one committee
Select Committees scrutinise the work of individual government departments and Parliament itself
General committees scrutinizes, comments and ameds bills that may become acts
Joint committees composed of MP's and peers to assist the swift passage of laws
Whip system
Whips are MP's or peers charged with whipping into line backbenchers in debates/votes
Party whip refers to the MP's membership of his party
MPs also receive a circular called 'The Whip' which tells them how to vote and attend matters

Public bills effect the whole county
Private bills effect specific individuals or organisations
Private member bills are introduced by backbenchers
Must be the 'first member through the door' to the Public Bill Office 15 working days before the date they wish to present it
Green Paper is a sketchy consultation outlining the 'broad spirit' of the bill
Two early versions of legislation comes first
White Paper is a more detailed outline of the law
