  1. What led Elizabeth to explore?
    1. Expanding trade
      1. Trade was expanding rapidly as the New World offered many new opportunities for trade.
        1. Conflict with Spain and the Netherlands had hit the cloth and wool trade hard, meaning it was vital for England to find new trading opportunities.
          1. Reports from travellers suggested enormous rewards and treasures such as silver and tobacco. Other countries such as Spain had gotten rich quick from silver mines in Peru.
          2. Triangular Trade
            1. During Elizabeth's reign English merchants began to exploit the ancient African slave trade.
              1. The infamous trade route developed on a trans-Atlantic scale.
                1. John Hawkins first bought slaves in 1562, transported the across the Atlantic and sold them to Spanish Colonists. With the proceeds he bought ginger, animal hides, sugar and some pearls, making hge profits. he then repeated the journey in 1564.
                2. Adventure
                  1. Some young Elizabethan men went on voyages of discovery and exploration in the hopes to find wealth and fortune. The accounts of these voyages persuaded people to further venture into the unknown.
                  2. New Technology
                    1. Navigation was becoming increasingly more precise, meaning voyages were safer, quicker and more precise. For example, mathematician Thomas Harriot invented a simpler way to workout the direction you need to go in, by using the sun, in 1584.
                      1. By the 15th century quadrants and astrolabes were more commonly used to accurately workout were to go using the stars.
                    2. Why did Drake circumnavigate the globe?
                      1. Revenge
                        1. Drake's main purpose was to raid Spanish colonies to get revenge, after a voyage in 1567-8. In 1567-8, Drake joined John Hawkins on a third trans-Atlantic voyage. During which the Spanish attacked their boats at St Juan de Ulua, killing 325men.
                        2. Money
                          1. Although there are political reasons for the circumnavigation, there were still many great profits to be made to and from the journey to the Americas. Due to many investing in his expedition at court Drake was able to create a massive haul of treasure at around £500.000.000 in todays moeny, making him and his investors incredibly rich.
                        3. What was the significance of Drake's circumnavigation?
                          1. England was a sea-faring nation
                            1. Drake's crew were only the second crew in history to have achieved such a feat, this was a great boost to English morale and established the reputation of English ships and sailors as being among the finest in the world.
                            2. Encouraging explorations
                              1. From far travels they gathered useful information about the Americas, as well as keeping thorough logs of their voyage to be written up and shared with other English sailors
                              2. Nova Albion
                                1. In June 1579, the Golden Hind was in urgent need of repair after having explored the furthest reaches of North America's Pacific coast. Drake landed in a bay, and the native Americans treated the English with great hospitality, and performed a ceremony. Drake then declared Elizabeth 1 to be its sovereign and named it Nova Albion.
