Resumen del Recurso
Heat
Heat Transfer
Convection
Convection works in fluids (gases and liquids!)
Some fluid is heated
It rises as it is less dense
It spreads throughout the area
It then cools and sinks
This begins again as the heater sucks in more fluid to replace that which is gone
Conduction
Heat transfers from hot objects to cold objects
The bigger the difference in heat, the faster the transfer
Heat flow stops at equal temperatures
In solids (especially metals) the primary method of heat transfer is heat being passed atom to atom along the chain
Radiation
Everything eventually calls down as everything emits electromagnetic waves - thermal radiation
Shiny objects reflect the waves better than black objects
As a result
Black objects gain and lose heat easily
People are wrapped in silver blankets when they are rescued to conserve heat
Thermal Expansion
Bimetallic Strip
Uses
Fire Bells
Temperature systems
Air conditioning
Thermometers
What is it?
One side expands more rapidly than the other
The sides are riveted together
This forces it to bend
For example: Invar and Brass
With more heat
The object expands more
This means that in winter train tracks have gaps in them
As in summer they will expand into the gaps due to the heat
Liquids expand faster than solids
And gases are the quickest of them all!
