Polarization

Applications and Skills

Describing methods of polarization
Sketching and interpreting diagrams illustrating polarized, reflected and transmitted beams
Solving problems involving Malus’s law

Main Activities:
Task #1: Download and view this Powerpoint on Polarisation (10 mins)
Task #2: Explore with this Malus's Law Simulation by adjusting the "polarizer orientation" and/or the "analyzer orientation". [Click on the left and right arrows to make fine adjustments to the orientations of each of the polarizer and the analyzer.] (10 mins) NOTE: You could come back to this simulation to check answers on problems relating to Malus's Law.
Task #3: Download this Powerpoint on Solving Malus's Law Problems and study carefully the worked examples. [Get you calculator out and make sure you can perform the required mathematical operations on your TI-83!] (10 mins)
Task #4: Complete Worksheet #3 Polarisation of Topic 4 Student Workbook (20 mins)

Homework: Test your understanding by completing the Topic 4 Polarisation Quiz.
