Question Answer
What is the circulatory system? The system that transports nutrients, energy, oxygen and waste throughout the body.
What are the tasks of circulatory system? • carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells so that respiration can happen • removes carbon dioxide from the cells, taking it to the lungs where it is exhaled • transports other waste products to where they can be disposed of • distributes heat around the body. Heat is a by-product of respiration.
What does your circulatory system consist of? Your heart, blood vessels and blood.
Why is your heart referred to as the "engine" of the circulatory system? It constantly pumps blood through the blood vessels.
Where does the blood flow through? the blood vessels
What are the three types of blood vessels? • Arteries • Capillaries • Veins
What do your arteries do? Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
What make the capillaries special in comparison to other blood vessels? The capillaries are the smallest/finest of blood vessels,.which enables them to reach every cell in the body and their thin walls allow for digested materials to pass through them.
What are veins? Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
How is blood pushed back up to the heart through the veins? Muscle contractions allow blood to be pushed back up to the heart through the veins.
What do the valves in veins do? They ensure that the blood flows in one direction.
What is a thrombus? A type of blood clot that is formed after you sit for a long time.
What is the fatal condition that causes a thrombus to form in a deep vein in your leg which can block your arteries? Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
What causes bruises? Your capillaries bursting after you bump into something.
True or False: Your heart is about the size of your fist. True
Where is the heart situated? In the middle of your chest, behind the breastbone.
What is heart made out of? Cardiac muscle?
How does cardiac muscle never get tired? it gets signals from a part of the heart called the pacemaker.
Why is the circulatory system also known as the double system? It has two circuits (the first goes to and away from the heart and the second goes lungs and back).
What is the difference between deoxygenated and oxygenated blood? Oxygenated blood is rich in oxygen while deoxygenated blood is not (does it really need an explanation though?).
How many chambers does the heart have? four
What are the three main stages of a heart beat? 1. The two Atria contract, pushing blood down into the ventricles 2. The ventricles contract, forcing blood out of the heart and into the body and lungs 3. The heart muscle relaxed and the Atria are filled with blood
What causes heart disease? A build up of plaque in the arteries?
What is plaque? A mixture of cholestrol, calcium and fibrin that build up in your arteries if you eat too many animal products.
What is angina? A heart condition that is caused by a lack of oxygen due to blocked arteries (erythrocytes in blood carry oxygen do duh) and causes severe chest pain. If arteries are completely blocked, the victim will die of heart disease.
