Lit Terms: What is an allegory? A story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a symbolic meaning, typically a moral or political one. (represents some other meaning) Ex: Wall-E is an allegory to save the earth.
Lit Terms: What is an allusion? This is an indirect reference in which is designed to refer as a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, or political significance without mentioning it. Ex: Hey! Guess who the new Newton is? Newton is referring to a scientific new student.
Lit Terms: What is an apostrophe? When a writer or speaker addresses an imaginary character in his speech, such as figure of speech not a punctuation mark. Ex: Welcome O' Life! ("Life") used as a character
Lit Terms: Connotation is? An idea or meaning that the "word" refers to as its literal meaning. Ex: The word "home" represents family, comfort, and security.
Lit Terms: Denotation is? Denotation is a " words" actual literal meaning. Ex: King Size is a larger size, portion, or amount.
Lit Terms: Diction is? The choice or use of words and phrases in speech or writing. Ex: Her diction revealed where she grew up because she always used slang from her hometown.
Lit Terms: Define Euphemism. Euphemism is a polite and indirect expression that is used to replace words that have a harsh and impolite meaning that might sound unpleasant. Ex: You are becoming a little thin on top (bald)
Lit Terms: Define Foreshadowing. When a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. Ex: In John Steinbeck's the novel Of Mice and Men, George killing Candy's dog and later George killing Lennie in the head.
Lit Terms: Define Hyperbole. This is an exaggeration that is not taken literally. Ex: I will go blind without my glasses!
Lit Terms: What is Imagery? Imagery is an expression that represent objects, actions, or ideas that appeal to our physical senses. Ex: It was "dark" and "dim" in the forest. Dark and dim are visual images.
