Question Answer
What is a nanometre? 1 billionth of a metre 0.0000000001m
What is nanoscience? Nanoscience is the science of small things. Objects between 1 and 100nm in size
Why are nano particles so important? nano-scale particles exhibit properties not seen in the bulk chemical. eg nano silver particles behave differently to the original molecule.
Nanoparticles are useful in cosmetics because... They are so small, they can be absorbed deeper into the skin and therefore be more effective for moisturisers and deodorants.
What is used in self cleaning windows? Self-cleaning glass is coated with nano scale titanium dioxide particles. These catalyse the breakdown of dirt in the presence of UV light and also cause water to spread out in a thin film, rather than formingdroplets on the surface. The combined effort of sunshine and rainwater cleans the windows!
Name the nano particles used in sun tan lotion. Nano-scale particles of titanium dioxide can be used in sunscreen to block harmful ultraviolet light. This helps to prevent sunburn and skin cancer. These particles are so small that they cannot be seen and so make the sunscreen invisible.
Why are silver nanoparticles useful? Silver nanoparticles are antibacterial so can prevent the spread of microorganisms in fridges. They also fight against viruses and fungi. Silver nanoparticles can be used in plasters and antibacterial socks.
What are some risks of nanoparticles on the environment? Nanomaterials currently being used have been tested to ensure that they cause no immediate damage to the environment but their long-term effects are as yet unknown. They could bioaccumulate and become toxic in the water supply.
What are the health risks of using nanoparticles in sunscreens and cosmetics? Nano-scale silver (deodorants) and titanium dioxide (sun screens) are applied to the skin and can therefore be easily absorbed into the body. While it has been shown that these uses are safe in the short term, there is no certainty that exposure over many years will not result in cancers .
Why are nanotubes useful for catalysts? Because they have a large surface area.
