Question Answer
Bone (osseous tissue) Composed of: cells in lacunae and calcium salts. Stores: CA and other minerals Makes: Blood cells Used to: Support/protect body
Hyaline cartilage Made of: Abundant collagen fibers & rubbery matrix Located: Nose, end of long bones, trachea (gristle) Most common cartilage! Entire fetal skeleton is made of this!
Fibrocartilage Highly compressible (tensile strength absorbs shock) Collagen fibers run parallel Example: forms cushion-like discs between vertebrae
Elastic Cartilage Provides elasticity Example: supports the external ear
Dense Connective Tissue Fibroblast cells Matrix element: made of collagen fibers Dense Reg. withstands stress from 1 direction Dense Irreg: stress from many directions
Areolar connective tissue Location: Mostly in connective tissue Contains: All 3 fiber types in gel-like matrix Soft pliable tissue Can soak up extra fluid
Adipose tissue (fat) Matrix: is an areolar tissue Cells: contain large liquid deposits Functions: Insulates the body, protects some organs, & serves as a site of reserve fuel storage
Blood Cells: surrounded by fluid matrix Fibers: visible during clotting Function: transports materials
Reticular connective tissue Delicate network of interwoven fibers Forms stroma of lymphoid organs (Lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow)
