Question Answer
Weathering process that breaks rocks down into smaller and smaller pieces
What are the 2 types of weathering? Mechanical and Chemical
What is the similarity with chemical and mechanical weathering? Both break rocks into pieces
Mechanical Weathering breaks rocks into smaller pieces without changing the chemical make-up of the rock
What are the types of Mechanical Weathering? Temperature Changes, Abrasion, Ice Wedging (Frost Action), Root Action, and Animal Activity
The rate of mechanical weathering depends on what? A mineral’s hardness
Temperature Changes The heat during the day causes objects to expand, then at night they contract. This causes peeling & flaking of rock’s outer layers.
Abrasion when rock particles rub against one another & other rocks due to streams, wind, waves, gravity, and glaciers
Ice Wedging (Frost Action) caused by freezing and melting of water in cracks.
Root Action pressure from root growth breaking into cracks
Animal Activity animals dig holes in the ground which allows air and water in resulting
Chemical Weathering process that breaks down rocks by changing the chemical makeup of the rock
Chemical weathering is faster with? - High temperature - More Moisture
What are the Types of Chemical Weathering? Plant Acids, Oxidation, Natural Acids, and Hydrolosis
Plant Acids tannic acid in plants dissolves the minerals in the rocks causing them to break down
Oxidation oxygen reacts with the minerals in the rocks and cause them to break down
Natural Acids carbonic acids form in the air and reacts with the rocks to break them down
Hydrolosis water reacts with minerals in rocks
What are the factors affecting weathering rates? Rock Make-Up, Surface Area, Climate, Topography & Elevation, and Organic Activity
Frost Action is most likely to occur when? The type of climate is cold and moist
Why are caves not formed in just any type of rock? Hydrolysis can only absorb minerals in certain types of rocks
