Question Answer
Summarise the key events 1933 - 36 1933 - Left the League Disarmament Conference & began rearming (in secret) 1934 - A Non -Aggression Pact with Poland (Clever!) 1934 - Attempted the Anschluss (Not so clever!) 1935 - Saar Plebiscite, Anglo-German Naval Agreement & Conscription 1936 - Remilitarisation of the Rhineland, Rome-Berlin Axis, Spanish Civil War
Why did Hitler have to be 'cautious' at this early stage? He had no military power because of Versailles, no alliances, no secure power base at home and powerful French and Russian armies to consider. The French had allies in eastern Europe, Italy was hostile, It was not a time for bold ventures.
Describe the attempted Anschluss of 1934 Austrian CHancellor, Dolfuss had banned the Austrain Nazis - Hitler ordered them to cause 'havoc' - this turned into a botched coup - Dolfuss was shot - Mussolini sent troops to the border to deter a German invasion - HItler resisted
What was happening globally which worked to Hitler’s advantage? The League was failing against Japan in Manchuria. The Disarmament Conference was getting nowhere. Britain & France were not united The USA was heading towards isolation. The USSR was in internal chaos (The Great Terror)
What was the Stresa Front? (1935) A 'pact' between France, Britain and Italy condemning German rearmament (1935) - nothing practical came from it.
Why did HItler not have to worry about the Stresa Front? It collapsed within months. Italy invaded Abyssinia , Britian agreed a Naval deal with the Germans undermining it!
1935 ‘agreement’ with Britain Anglo-German Naval Agreement. German navy permitted to increase to 35% the size of Britains
1935 Propaganda victory Saar Plebiscite - overwhelming (90%) support for a return to Germany. Vindicates Hitler’s leadership
German involvement in the Spanish Civil War - 1936…. Supports the Nationalist under General Franco / opportunity to test out his new Luftwaffe and tank divisions - blitzkrieg tactics
Building alliances - 1936 Rome -Berlin Axis (November) with Italy. Reshaping the political landscape of Europe
Hitler takes a gamble 1936 - where? Rhineland - remilitarisation / 22,000 German troops / Allies do nothing
