Bowenian Theory- Family systems Theory - Natural systems theory NOT cybernetics - Humans and Human families are guided by the family emotional system *what is the general mood and tone of this family?
Bowenian theory-Family systems theory Goal of the therapy is to decrease anxiety and increase differentiation
Boweinan Theory- Family systems theory One core concept- Togetherness VS individuality - Unresolved emotional attachment to one's family must be resolved * Have to resolve conflicts with the family to not move the conflict to next generation
Bowen Human Relationship Driven by two counterbalancing forces * Individuality and togetherness
Bowenian Theory- 8 concepts 1. Triangles 2. Differentiation of self 3.nuclear family emotional system 4. family projection process 5. Multigenerational transmission process 6. emotional cutoff 7. Sibling Position 8. Societal emotional process
Bowenian theory- Concept - Triangles Triangles- Three-person relationship - Smallest stable relationship system * odd man out- Results in anxiety
Bowenian Theory- concepts- Triangle Tension Mild tension- between insiders causes the most uncomfortable one to seek closeness to outsider Moderate tension- one side in the conflict, 2 sides in harmony High tension- outside position becomes desirable- insider gets the outsider to fight with the other insider
Triangles- " wedding gift Triangle" Wife and mother in law form a bond that can later make him jealous - Wife overinvolved in mother and son relationship
Triangles- " Loyalty alignmnet Triangle" Partner and parents remain overly close - Transforming the relationship from adolescent to adult
Triangles- " Dominant father in law Triangle" Wife and father unite to criticize the husband
Detriangulation 1. Increasing partner/ parent ability to manage their own anxiety 2. Fortifying couples emotional functioning by increasing their ability to operate with less anxiety
Bowenian Theory- Concepts- Differentiation of self * self VS others * Thoughts VS emotions - Families determine how much self one gets to develop
Differentiation Capacity to think and reflect, to not respond automatically to emotional pressures * Balance thinking and feeling
Highly differentiated individuals - Can separate emotional from rational thoughts - have a balance of "I" and "We" Emotion- "I'm angry" Thought-" it is not ok to fight" Bhevaior- To fight or not fight
Poorly differentiated individuals - Less developed self, the more influence others have on functioning * depend heavily on acceptance and approval of others * can try and control other people
Bowenina Theory- concept- Nuclear family emotional system Four basic relationship patterns that govern where problems develop in a family - marital conflict - dysfunction in one spouse - impairment on 1 + children - emotional distance
Bowenian theory- concept- Nuclear family emotional system- Marital conflict Family tension increases - spouses get anxious internalized anxiety to marital relationship * each focuses on what is wrong with the other
Bowenian theory- Concepts- Nuclear family emotional system- Dysfunction in one spouse Family tension rises further- one pressure other to think and act in a certain way, both accommodate to preserve harmony but * one does more
Bowenian Theory- Concept- nuclear family emotional system- impairment on 1 or more children Family tension- spouses focus their anxieties on 1 or more of their children - worry excessively - the more the parent focus on the child the more child will focus on them
Bowenian Theory- concept- nuclear family emotional system- impairment of one or more children ( how it affects the child) - Childs anxiety can impair their school performance, social relationships, and health - process undercuts the Childs differentiation from the family
Bowenian Theory- Concept- Nuclear family emotional system- Emotional distance Conflict/ tension- distance from others to reduce the intensity of the relationship * risk becoming isolated
Bowenina Theory- Concept- Family projection process - Primary way parents transmit their emotional problems to a child - can impact functioning in child - Three steps
Boweninian Theory- Concept- Family projection - Three steps 1. Parent focuses on a child out of fear that something is wrong with the child 2. The parents interpret the child's behavior as confirming the fear 3. The parents treat the child as if something is really wrong
Why family projection process? - All is done to avoid the problems happening in the relationship - Sibling less involved in the projection process more differentiated
Bowenian theory- concept- multigenerational transmission process - Anything we don't resolve in one generation will continue to the next generation - people select mates with levels of differentiated that matches their own - Differentiation increases and decreases at every generation
Bowenian Theory- concept- emotional cutoff Unresolved emotional issues with parents, siblings and other family - reducing or cutting off emotional contact * problems are dormant but not resolved
Bowenina Theory- concept- sibling position Idea that people who grow up in the same sibling position predictability have important common characteristics - expected to raise children differently - oldest VS youngest
Bowenina theory- concept- societal emotional process Each concept applies to nonfamily groups - emotional systems govern behavior on a societal level * how we affect society?
Therapist stance and tasks- 4 tasks- task 1 1. Control emotional tone of the session * control the level of anxiety in the room
