Question Answer
what is a "Pure Substance" ? Matter that can only have one kind of substance in it, for example, table salt.
What is a "Mechanical Mixture" ? A mixture in which you can see the different parts, for example, soil. (same as a hetergenous mixture)
What is a "Homogenous Mixture" ? A mixture in which you cannot see the different parts, for example, Windex.
What is a "Solution" ? A mixture in which you cannot see the different parts. (same as a homogenous mixture)
What is a "Heterogenous Mixture" ? A mixture in which you can see the different parts. (same as mechanical mixture)
What is a "Dilute" ? A solution that contains small amounts of solute to solvent.
What is "Concentration" ? The amount of solute dissolved in certain amounts of solvent, for example, apple juice.
What is the "Particle Theory of Matter" ? The theory the states that all matter is made up of tiny moving and vibrating particles that are attached and bonded to each other and have spaces between them.
What is a "Solvent" ? In a solution, the substance that does the dissolving.
What is a "Solute" ? In a solution, the substance that dissolves.
What is "Solubility" ? The maximum amount of solute that would dissolve in a particular amount of solvent.
What is a "Saturated Solution" ? A solution in which no more solute can be dissolved.
What is an "Unsaturated Solution" ? A solution in which there is still room for more solvent to dissolve.
Why is it important to measure accurately while conducting a lab ? It is important because if you don't measure accurately, your answers will not be correct.
What does this "Safety Symbol" mean ? It means that the substance is flammable and combustible.
Name 5 important safety rules. !. Always wear safety equipment. 2. Tie your hair back (if you have long hair). 3. Never use cracked or broken glassware. 4. Wash your hands after handling substances 5. Read all written instructions before starting an activity.
Why is it hard to tell whether a substance is a solution or a pure substance ? It is hard because in a solution and in a pure substance, you cannot see the different parts.
How can you distinguish solutions from a pure substance ? A pure substance cannot be separated in to two different parts and a solution can.
*in what order does the matter chart go in* ? Matter - can it be separated? - no - pure substance - yes - mixture - Can you see the different parts? - no - solution - yes - mechanical mixture
Name 5 heterogenous mixtures. 1. box of toys 2. drawer 3. pencil case 4. fridge 5. soup
Draw a particle picture of a mechanical mixture. The two colours represent two different substances.
What does a solution look like ?
Explain the difference between "Soft" and "Hard" water. Soft water is water that has been treated with salt to remove minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. Hard water is water that still contains minerals inside it.
What factors effect the rate of dissolving ? If the water is hot, for example, it will make the substance dissolve quicker.
Is stirring necessary for dissolving a solute? Explain why or why not. It is not necessary, but it does speed up the dissolving.
