Question Answer
Blue litmus paper Acid/Base indicator: Turns red in an acid. Turns blue in a base.
Red litmus paper Acid/Base indicator: Turns blue in a base. Stays red in an acid.
Phenolphthalein Acid/Base indicator: Does nothing in an acid. Turns pink/purple in a base.
Methyl Orange Acid/Base indicator: Turns red/coral in an acid. Turns yellow/orange in a base.
Neutralisation Chemical process: This occurs when and acid and a base combine and cancel each other out. Acid + Metal Hydroxide -> Water + Salt of the Acid e.g. Calcium metal + Hydrochloric Acid -> Water + Calcium Chloride
Acids + Metal Carbonates Chemical reaction: Acid + Metal Carbonate -> Water+ Carbon Dioxide (gas) + Salt of the Acid e.g. Sodium Carbonate + Sulfuric acid -> Water + Carbon Dioxide + Sodium Sulfate
Carbon Dioxide Gas: (CO2) Can be identified by channelling it through a tube into limewater, if the water turns milky it's CO2.
Acids + Metals Chemical reaction: Acid + Metal -> Hydrogen Gas + Salt of the Acid e.g. Aluminium + Sulfuric Acid -> Aluminium sulfate + Hydrogen Gas
Hydrogen Gas Gas: (H2) Can be identified if it's bubbles explode with a loud pop when exposed to flame.
The pH scale The pH scale is a scale on which we can easily identify how Acidic or Basic a substance is. - Measured 1-14 - 7 is neutral, <7 is Basic, >7 is Acidic -Usually measured with a universal indicator
