what was a motte and bailey? where was it put? what were the uses a motte and baile was a norman defence system of a fortressed city with a tower on top of a hill overlooking it. There were many put across England so that you were more than a day away from one. they were for defence against small attacks.
how did the white tower defend England? what were some defensive features? it showed the power of normans and England, as it was the first stone castle in England and was a prison. there were many archers in the castle. it was built by the River Thames to act as a moat. the castle was secure, because it was tall, and had 4.5m thick walls.
how was it used to scare the English? why should he try to scare the English? it scared the English because of how overwhelming it was, it was also very close to the city of London. they even knocked down houses for it. they needed to intimidate as the new norman king had to demonstrate his power, especially after the rebellions in 1060/70
how was it used for administration to help run the country? it was right by the busiest river in the world so he could check everything that goes in and out of the city. he could oversee everything going on in his country as he was close to London. he needed the close eye to build his wealth.
how was the castle religious? why did the castle need to be religious? there was a chapel built right on the river so that everyone could see that religion (especially norman) was important. the chapel gained him political power because it could demonstrate norman's faith and building style
