What is cultural diversity? The range of different ideas and cultures that exist
What are norms? Normal and expected behaviour
What is society? A group of people who share a way of life and a set of rules
What is stigma? Something that marks a person out as very different from other people
What is formal sanction ? A punishment for breaking a law or a written rule
What is informal sanction? A punishment for braking a informal rule imposed by people around you
What is agency of social control? A group in society that teaches us how to behave
What is mass media? A form of communication that reaches a lot of people at one time
What is gender roles? Social differences between the expected behaviour for men and women
What is Nurture theory? The idea that we act as we do because we are taught how to by others
What is socialisation? The process of learning the rules of a culture
What is primary socialisation? Being taught how to behave by your family
What is secondary socialisation? Being taught how to behave by people in the wider world e.c.t school
What is informal socialisation? Learning how to behave as you live your life
What is informal socialisation? When people deliberately set out to change how you act
What is peer group? A group of people of the same age and similar interests
What is a instructed interview? An interview that takes the form of a conversation
What is role? Expected behaviour for a particular social situation e.g. work
What is labelling theory? People are given a label by other people and hen treated as though it were true.
What is status? Respect others give you
What is a role model? someone who others admire and look up to
What is feminist? Seen as normal for females
What is traditional? Something people have always done
What is gender? Differences in social role of males and females
What is domestic? To do with the home
What are gendered objects? Items that are intended for either boys or girls but not both
What is imitate? Copying
What is masculine? Seen as normal for males
What is nationality? Legal citizenship of a country with the right to have a passport and vote
What is ethnic? Refers to members of a cultural group
What is cultural identity? Sense of who you are and the culture you feel you belong to
What is family? A group of people related by marriage, blood or adoption
What is sanction? A reward or punishment used to make people act the way you wish
What is approval? Something that people think is good
What is expectation? A behaviour that people assume is normal
What is the formal curriculum? Things that are deliberately taught at school
What is the national curriculum? A set of subjects that all children in England and Wales are expected to study
What is the hidden curriculum? Messages that are passes on to children unintentionally
What are values? Beliefs that people in a culture share
What is truancy? Taking time off school without permission or reason
What is resocialisation? When people have to learn a NEW set of rules for a new situation and change their normal way of living
What is feral child? wild or unsocialised child
What is socialisation? The process of learning rules of a culture
What is adolescent? Teenager stage between childhood and adulthood
